Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
