New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
