At Least 6 Perish in Stampede at Ghana Military Recruitment Event

No fewer than 6 individuals have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.

The midweek "devastating" event seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," announced a statement from Ghana's armed forces.

Twenty-two additional individuals were injured, among them five who remain in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, Accra, with the aspiration of joining the armed forces.

The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest official data indicate, and such enlistment drives typically draw massive gatherings and frequently result in chaotic scenes.

The deadline to apply for this event was extended by a week to accommodate more applicants, as some had faced challenges in the process.

Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush took place before the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.

Order has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has now started.
